Urban Land Institute (ULI) Fall Meeting

Thousands of real estate professionals gathered in Washington D.C. recently for ULI’s Fall Meeting. A key focus throughout the meeting was Amazon’s selection of National Landling/Crystal City as the site for its HQ2. Critical to Amazon’s selection was the political cohesiveness and alignment of the many governmental and quasi-governmental authorities involved in the winning bid; transportation amenities that will be available at the site, including a pedestrian bridge linking it to Reagan National Airport; and the $1B innovation campus that will be developed at the site by Virginia Tech University. Talent, Lifestyle & Real Estate Expansion

According to the 2020 Emerging Trends in Real Estate report, which was presented at the ULI Fall Meeting, the top real estate market in 2020 will be Austin, followed by Raleigh/Durham, Nashville, Charlotte and Boston. According to Andres, rather than charity, this is an investment “from the brain as well as the heart” that will ultimately result in stronger communities. Learn more

Climate Migration Winners & Losers

A pair of speakers at the ULI Fall Meeting discussed how higher temperatures, rising sea levels and severe weather events could generate a wave of internal migration in the U.S. that will turn cities such as Cincinnati into “climate havens.” At the other end of this migration spectrum are the coastal cities, such as New Orleans, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, where the effects of climate change are likely to be more destructive. Larry Falkin, Director of Cincinnati’s Office of Environment and Sustainability, discussed plans underway in Cincinnati to be ready for this influx, including the development of affordable housing for short-term use by temporary climate refugees. Real Estate & Politics: A Conversation with Richard Florida

Please join Ellen Sinreich, ULI and NYU on October 16th in New York City for ULI NY’s Inaugural Speaker Series event featuring author, thought leader and researcher Richard Florida, for a provocative conversation about real estate and politics. Florida is the Director of the Martin Prosperity Institute at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, Global Research Professor at NYU, and founder of the Creative Class Group. According to the Ecomonist, Florida is “as close to a household name as it is possible for an urban theorist to be in America.” Learn more
